The government has said its plans to build a high speed rail link between London and the north of England will halve journey times between Birmingham and Manchester and between London and Manchester.

But opponents argue that HS2's predicted economic benefits have been overestimated by the government, and suggest swathes of picturesque countryside will be blighted by the railway.

Newsnight's David Grossman spoke to residents living along the HS2 route who fear their houses will only be sellable at a huge discount.
