Hammond is a hypocritical NIMBY

"Secretary of State for Transport Philip Hammond is wrong to say HS2 High Speed Train opposition is made up of a few NIMBYs (YP 18 Mar).

Opponents include Tax Payers Alliance, Adam Smith Institute, The Green Party, The Institute of Economic Affairs, Friends of the Earth, rail experts and leading business people.

In fact, Philip Hammond is a NIMBY. His May 2010 election leaflet said: "Philip opposes Labour's plans for a third runway at Heathrow - increasing air and noise pollution in Runnymede and Weybridge. The Conservatives will scrap the runway plan and instead build a high speed rail network..."

HS2 will not impact the North - South divide: According to the Department for Transport, 73% of the 30,000 regeneration jobs will be in London.

The business case is very weak and the demand forecast and benefits are wildly overstated. Yorkshire will be better served by speed and capacity improvements to existing lines, which will be much faster to implement, help more people, will cost less, and will do less damage to our climate and our diminishing tranquil countryside.
